Getting Around Moscow
One of the world's most efficient public transport systems. Master the Metro, bus routes, and navigate the city like a local.
Moscow boasts a massive public transport system managed by the transit authority (Mosgortrans). This integrated rail system includes the deep subway (Metro), overland commuter rail (MCD), and extensive bus routes. Whether you need to commute from the suburbs or travel between city terminals, the network is reliable. With rapid-transit options like the express bus and trams (modern streetcar network), navigating the transportation system is efficient, avoiding the notorious congestion of rush hour.

Navigation & Routes
Planning Your Route
To master public transit, use a trip planner app like Yandex Maps. It provides a detailed route-map and real-time schedules for every bus route and trolley line. Check the departure boards at the transit center carefully. Apps also show transfers between the Red-line, Green-line, and Orange line.
Intermodal Transport
Moscow's transportation options are fully integrated. You can switch from a streetcar (tram) to the Metrobus or ferries (river boats) using the same card. The system is designed to move passengers efficiently to and from the city center, connecting major terminals and residential areas seamlessly.
Transport FAQ
Is the Moscow Metro open 24/7?
No. The Moscow Metro and subways close around 1:00 AM and reopen at 5:30 AM. During the night, you can use night bus services or order a taxi. The MCC and commuter rail lines follow similar operating hours. Always check the timetables if traveling late on a weekday.
Do I need cash for the bus or trolley?
No! Drivers do not sell tickets. Public transportation is cashless. You MUST tap your Troika card or bank card on the validator upon boarding. Buy a card at a vending machine at any transit center or Metro station before your trip.
How do I get to the International Airport?
The fastest way to reach any International airport (SVO, DME, VKO) is the Aeroexpress train from a central train station. It avoids rush hour traffic. Alternatively, take a shuttle-bus or express bus from the nearest metro station or use a taxi app.
What are the main bus routes?
Bus routes cover the entire city, including areas far from the metro. The "Magistral" network (labeled M1, M2, etc.) runs through the city center on dedicated lanes. Use a plan your trip app to find the best bus route or trolley line for your destination.
Does Uber work in Moscow?
Global Uber does not work. You need Yandex Go or "Uber Russia". Yandex Go is the standard for hailing taxis and is integrated with other transportation services like car-sharing. It helps you get around efficiently despite city congestion.
How do I pay for the Metro?
The best way is the Troika card, offering the lowest fare. You can buy it at any vending machine. Alternatively, use Face Pay (biometrics) or tap a bank card directly at the turnstile. This applies to all mass-transit modes including the metro rail.
What is the difference between MCC and Metro?
The Metro is the underground subway, while the MCC is an above-ground light-rail ring. They are fully integrated parts of the transit system: you can transfer for free within 90 minutes using your Troika. Both handle heavy ridership during peak hours.
Are ferries part of the public transport system?
Yes, the new electric river ferries operate year-round on the Moscow River. They act as a regular public transit service, payable with Troika. They are a scenic way to travel to and from riverside residential districts.
Is navigation difficult in English?
Not anymore. All Metro stations have signs in English. Announcements on the Red-line and others are bilingual. Using a trip planner app like Yandex Maps makes navigation foolproof for international passengers and tourists.
Is car sharing popular?
Extremely. Moscow has a huge fleet of car-sharing vehicles. Apps like Delimobil and BelkaCar allow you to rent cars by the minute. It is a convenient option for the commuter who wants to avoid owning a car in the metropolitan area.
Are electric scooters available?
Yes, rental scooters (Whoosh, Urent) are everywhere in summer. They are perfect for short trips between bus stops or stations. They are integrated into the city's public transit apps for easy booking and hop-on access.
How much is a monthly pass?
A 30-day "Ediniy" unlimited pass on your Troika costs around 3,160 RUB. This covers all public transport zones in the center (Zone A), making it very economical for the daily commuter using the bus service and metro.
